FAQ
Torque wrenches, testing and calibrating technology
- What is the difference between static and dynamic loading?
If the load is applied in a uniform manner and without jerky stress peaks, it is called a static load. Click type torque wrenches automatically generate a certain dynamic load due to the release of the physical mechanism.
- Can I repair and calibrate my own torque wrenches myself?
Yes, once you have completed a training course at STAHLWILLE in Wuppertal or with an authorised body in connection with exports, for which a fee is charged. Authorisation is documented by a corresponding certificate. After you receive the certificate, you can also order spare parts. Further details: www.stahlwille-americas.com/en/training/
- Where can I find the operating instructions for my Stahlwille torque wrench, calibration or testing device?
You will find a large number of handbooks and further information in our download section
- Can I also loosen bolted connections with my torque wrench?
Yes, STAHLWILLE torque wrenches can also be used to undo/loosen bolted connections. However, please be sure to observe the information in the respective operating instructions. The load must never exceed the nominal value (highest measuring range value) of the wrench.
- Are the laboratory transducers type 7728 compatible with the workshop torque tester 7707W?
Laboratory transducers type 7728 are physically compatible with the housing of the workshop torque tester, type 7707W, up to the rated torque of 200 N·m. Above the nominal range 400 N·m, the diameter of the transducer is too large.
- What is the difference between testing and calibrating?
With testing, the torque tool is actuated manually; with calibrating, the tool being tested must be actuated by a system. It does not matter whether this is by means of a motorised unit or using a hand crank.
- How do I adjust my digital torque wrench or torque screwdriver?
In most cases, adjustments of digital STAHLWILLE torque and angle-controlled units can be carried out fully automatically with the aid of the motorised PerfectControl calibration systems or manually on the 730D, TTS and 714/766 systems. Please read the respective operating instructions.
- How can I adjust my digital torque wrench or torque screwdriver?
Please read the respective operating instructions. The 730/730Quick/730Fix/720/721 have 2 adjusting screws to set the lower and upper values individually. It is necessary to use a calibration system to verify the values.
- How can I calculated modified settings for a torque wrench?
Please refer to the instructions in Extract from the STAHLWILLE product catalog. With digital systems, you can enter the modified extension values in the system and the system calculates the correction.
- Can I also use the 7721 transducer for torque wrenches?
This is not recommended, as this transducer has itself been stressed/calibrated with a measuring shaft using torsion which means measurements will show incorrect results in the event transverse forces are applied, e.g. when used for torque wrenches.
- How great can the deviation be when I am testing a torque wrench on a 7721?
It is not possible to quantify that.
- Why is the digital display of my torque wrench flashing after the repair?
After implementation of the new calibration standard DIN EN ISO 6789:2017, manufacturers are required to indicate to the user if a torque wrench is operated in range beyond the calibrated range. At STAHLWILLE, we show this by making the display flash. The display is stable if used within the calibrated range.
- How old is my torque wrench?
From 1993 onwards, we have provided every torque wrench with a serial number. If your torque wrench does not have an serial number, it was produced before 1993. If you can see a serial number, look at the 2nd and 3rd digits. They show the year in which the wrench was manufactured. For example: SN 122xxxxx, this wrench was made in 2022.
- Can I have my older transducer DAkkS calibrated?
Of course, you can have any of our torque transducers DAkkS calibrated by us. You can find the corresponding accreditation document on our website here: www.stahlwille-americas.com/en/downloads/certificates/
- Is my STAHLWILLE torque wrench ESD capable?
None of our torque products is ESD capable but you will find a limited number of VDE torque wrenches in our VDE product range.
- Can I use my torque wrench under water?
Please note the IP class of the torque wrench concerned. In general, use under water is not recommended for any of our torque products, as extreme damage, up to and including destruction of the electronics or mechanical systems, may result.
- Why is it not necessary to reset Stahlwille torque wrenches to zero or the smallest scale value?
STAHLWILLE does not use a compression spring as the measuring element in its mechanical torque wrenches with a scale, but a freely floating flexible rod. This flexible bar is not subject to any load when not in use and therefore does not wear out. Furthermore, adjusting the values is very easy and lightning fast. Further details: STAHLWILLE | News detail
- Can I also test/calibrate other makes with the Stahlwille calibration system?
With very few exceptions, all torque wrenches can be recalibrated on STAHLWILLE calibration systems. The exceptions here can be wrenches with a large release angle or freewheel or with slip clutch mechanisms. In addition, excessively long or very short torque wrenches might be unsuitable due to the space available.
- What grease should I use when servicing the calibration equipment?
All this information can be found in the operating instructions under the heading "Maintenance". We recommend "Fin Grease MP 2/3" from the manufacturer "Interflon".
- Can impact wrenches also be tested/calibrated with these transducers?
Transducers of the type 7721-7724, 7727 and 7728 only allow purely static torque measurement. This means that impact, pulse and shut-off tools cannot be tested or calibrated with this measuring equipment.
- My transducer beeps three times in succession, what can I do?
The transducer has been blocked by the firmware due to an overload and has to be checked at the service centre in the Wuppertal factory. Please use our service portal on our website: https://service.stahlwille.de/en
- How can I reset the error message "tara blocked"? Do I have to send the transducer in?
The transducer has been blocked by the firmware due to an overload and has to be checked at the service centre in the Wuppertal factory. Please use our service portal on our website: https://service.stahlwille.de/en
- Can I be accredited with Stahlwille calibration equipment?
Yes, indeed, you can be accredited by DAkkS with both the manual (handwheel) calibration systems and with the motor-driven calibration systems, for torque according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025/2018.
- Why does my new calibration certificate no longer say whether the torque wrench is inside or outside the tolerance?
Since 1 March 2018, STAHLWILLE has supplied all torque certificates in accordance with DIN EN ISO 6789-2:2017. In addition to the well-known maximum display deviation, the total uncertainty of measurement is also indicated. Every user of this torque wrench or torque screwdriver must decide for himself or herself whether they can use this product for the current application or not. If you do not have any experience or specifications in this area, you can still use the specified maximum display deviation as a guide.
- Do I have to add together the two figures for uncertainty and display deviation of the calibration certificate?
No, both figures stand on their own, although the display deviation value does contribute marginally to the uncertainty calculation.
- Can I have torque multipliers (Multipower) calibrated by Stahlwille?
No, unfortunately not any more. Since we implemented the new calibration standard DIN EN ISO 6789:2017, this is no longer possible.
- The display of my torque wrench is faulty, can I replace it myself?
All maintenance work on STAHLWILLE digital systems is carried out exclusively at the Wuppertal plant.
- Where can I get an exploded view of the torque wrenches showing spare parts?
Only partners & customers trained and authorised by STAHLWILLE can receive the relevant documentation to obtain spare parts for torque products. Find out more about our training courses: www.stahlwille-americas.com/en/training/
- Is it also possible to calibrate other makes with the Stahlwille calibration system?
With very few exceptions, all torque spanners can be recalibrated on STAHLWILLE calibration systems. Exceptions here may be, for example, spanners with a large release angle/freewheel or with slip clutch mechanisms. Furthermore, excessively long torque spanners may be unsuitable due to the space available.
- Why is the DAkkS logo missing on my calibration certificate?
Only DAkkS certificates may bear that logo. Factory calibrations are excluded from this.

Insert tools, ratchets and fine-tooth ratchets
- My ratchet insert tool or fine-tooth ratchet is jammed, what can I do?
Simply open the ratchet, clean it, oil it and reassemble it. If any parts are faulty, please use the respective repair kit. Further details: STAHLWILLE | News detail and Instructions for repair kits.
- Can I use the standard sockets on an impact wrench?
Due to the risk of accidents (chipping of chrome and metal parts), chrome-plated tools should generally not be used on impact wrenches.
- What lubricants should I use when servicing ratchets?
Use a very thin light-running oil or gun oil. Due to their viscosity, greases would cause the mechanical parts to stick together and the tool would become difficult to use.
